Meade Memorial Church was organized in 1869 on Oronoco Street in Alexandria, Virginia. The church was named as a memorial to Bishop William Meade, the third bishop of Virginia. In 1872 the church’s ministry was directed to the Black community. The church edifice, completed in 1913, had a seating capacity of 117 and a nave area was equipped with an electric organ and seating for a chancel choir. Meade became a mission in 1945 and was granted church status by the 181st Annual Council of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia in January 1976. A Parish Hall, built in 1956, connected the church building by a lobby that housed the sacristy, restrooms, folding partitions, stage, kitchen and stairway to the second floor offices. The Rector’s study, administrative offices and meeting rooms were on the second floor.

By 1988, Meade Memorial ministered to over 100 families and the size of the congregation made it possible for the members to know each other personally, thus creating a feeling of love and family. Today, the congregation is a diverse group of over 175 people, including all ages, economic and educational levels. Meade Church's new building, completed in 1990, provides more than 5,000 square feet of area space, and through our facilities' outreach ministry, we will, as in the past, make a significant positive impact on others in this community
